During their economics unit for socials studies, each second grade classroom at Robert Martin Elementary created their very own popcorn company. Each class selected a company name and logo and students were assigned to one of the following departments: accounting, packaging, advertising, or manufacturing. They visited Andover State Bank to apply for a loan, which was used to purchase products to make the popcorn. They also visited The Popcorner to gain insight on how to run a successful business. During the unit, students were engaged in a variety of activities that included making advertisement posters, writing jingles, collecting orders, counting money, and then on popping day…making popcorn, packaging it, and delivering it!

This year the students decided to donate some of the money raised to SCARF (Sunlight Children’s Advocacy and Rights Foundation), a local charity that provides resources and facilities to support and protect abused and neglected children and their families. Suzi Thien, Executive Director of SCARF (and former counselor at RME), visited with the second graders at Martin Elementary about the organization and how it helps children and their families stay safe. Together, the presidents of each popcorn company presented Mrs. Thien with the $300 donation. The students and teachers were delighted to help children in need!
