COUNSELOR’S CORNER
By Mrs. Kathy Hubbard
Welcome to Sunflower! I would like to take this time to introduce myself. I am Mrs. Hubbard, the school counselor. As the school counselor, there are many services provided throughout the school year for students and/or their parents.
These services include:
ü Individual counseling (students)
ü Group counseling (students)
ü Classroom Guidance classes
ü Contact person for outside counseling agencies
ü Provide information to parents (child development, special education needs, family issues)
The students (Kindergarten through 5th grade) may visit with the counselor:
ü During scheduled classroom visits
ü During scheduled visits to the counselor’s office
ü At lunch or recess
ü Before or after school
ü When there is a problem or concern
ü If requested by a parent, teacher, or student
Classroom guidance classes:
During August I visit all of the classrooms to introduce myself and to explain what the counseling program is. Then throughout the remainder of the year, I visit every classroom twice a month (K-5th grade) to present various topics. Some of these topics may include: friendship skills, conflict resolution skills, problem solving, healthy choices, caring and empathy, honesty, goal setting, personal safety, bullying, and career awareness.
The Character First! Education program is used as a resource. Our first character term is – dependability. We will emphasize the following I WILL statements:
I WILL… keep my word.
be careful what I promise.
correct my mistakes.
pull my share of the load.
not have a bad attitude.
If there are questions regarding the activities or curriculum, please feel free to call me or stop by my office.
