Andover Selects 2004 Award Winners
Andover, Kan. — May 3, 2005
A crowd turned out to honor Andover school district award winners last night. The Andover Public Schools Board of Education hosted a program and reception at Andover Middle School to honor recipients of the district’s Golden Apple, School Bell, Helping Hand, Golden Key, and Bright Red Apple awards, as well as Board of Education scholarship recipients, Kansas Teacher of the Year nominees and the Master Teacher candidate.
The district awards are given to people who make significant contributions to the educational process in the district. Nominations come from students, faculty members and patrons. A committee then selects winners based on the candidates’ service to students and to the district.
“We have many outstanding nominees each year,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Terry. “We are fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals sharing their time and talents with our students and our district.”
The outstanding service award was initiated during the 1987-88 school year. In acknowledgement of the district’s growth, a change was made during the 1995-96 school year to enable the district to formally recognize and honor more individuals or groups for outstanding service to our students and school district.
The Golden Apple Award is given to a certified teacher with four or more years in USD 385 – one teacher from each attendance center receives this award. Recipients exhibit educational effectiveness (effective instructional techniques, classroom organization, behavior management), zeal in promoting the advancement of education (professional, enthusiastic), and the ability to inspire all students (effective rapport with students).
The School Bell Award goes to two classified staff members. These two recipients have made outstanding contributions to the building or district that had a significant impact on services, provide continuous support to the success of the building or district, and exhibit zeal in providing support (professional, enthusiastic, willing to do more than expected).
The Helping Hand Award is presented to a school volunteer in each attendance center. These recipients have made outstanding contributions to the building that significantly impacted students, provide continuous support to the success of the building or district and exhibit zeal in providing support (enthusiastic, willing to do more than expected).
The Bright Red Apple Award goes to two new-to-the-profession (first, second or third year) teachers – one from elementary, one from secondary. These teachers exhibit educational effectiveness (effective instructional techniques, classroom organization, behavior management), zeal in promoting the advancement of education (professional, enthusiastic), and an ability to inspire all students (effective rapport with students).
The Golden Key Award is presented to an individual, business, or community/civic organization. The recipient has made outstanding contributions to the district that significantly impacted the students and the school district.
