Andover High: Teacher Pages

Ms. Woltz

Ms. Woltz's Web Page

October 01, 2006

Hi, my name is Michelle Woltz.  This is my 14th year of teaching, and also my 14th year here at Andover High School.  In addition, I have also taught at AMS and ACMS as well as Butler County Community College. I am on the SILT committee at AHS and also supervise the Friday School detention room as well as sponsor the FBLA club.

I was born in Wichita, and have pretty much lived here all my life. I went to high school at West High and Northwest High in Wichita Kansas.  I was in the first graduating class from Northwest.  When it came time to go to college and make a choice of what I wanted to be when I grew up, I couldn't decide.  I always thought I would be a teacher, but I was working full time at a bank and loved that, and I also loved the thought of pursuing something in the medical profession.  I eventually ended up with a Bachelors degree in Business Management from Southwest Missouri State University with a minor in English in 1983.

Subsequently, I worked as a medical transcriptionist in a doctor's office in a small town, then went back to get certified to teach Business classes while I was pregnant with my first child.  I stayed home with my 2 daughters, Amy and Ashley, and then updated my certificate when Ashley was old enough to attend kindergarten.  I have been a teacher in Andover ever since Ashley started her academic adventures.*  In 2002 I went back to school once again to get my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Wichita State University.  I absolutely love teaching.  I really enjoy being involved in the lives of kids and watching them grow and become skilled at new things.

My favorite activities always have something to do with water, water, then some more water.  If it's a swimming pool, lake, beach, or ocean, (the Caribbean is my absolute favorite) I am completely mesmerized.  Those who know me well still laugh at how much I enjoy anything around water.  I bought our first boat about 6 years ago and spend a lot of time at El Dorado Lake each summer.  Here's a picture of me enjoying my boat!

This is me, about to do what I love the most!

The craziest thing I have ever done was when I went scuba diving in the Caribbean.  I took Amy, my oldest daughter on a high school graduation trip of her choice, and was thrilled she chose something centered around a beach.  One afternoon we went out on a large vessel with the intentions of snorkeling but then let the guide talk us into scuba diving.  Off we went with only 20 minutes of lessons.  He tried to give us instructions while we clung to the sides of the boat while the boat was being tossed amongst 6 foot waves.  As luck would have it, I was closest to the back of the boat and so I was the first to jump in.  The plan was for the first person to go down slowly and get use to the depth changes.  Once the person ahead of you was well along the way, the next person would then jump in and start trying to get acclimated.  There were about 10 of us; I got fairly seasick trying to hold on to the anchor at the bottom of the ocean while waiting for the others to get acclimated to the tumultuous seas.

Amy and I were the only ones that survived the acclamation process, and she even outlasted me.  We got a fun video of the whole event. I still can't believe I tried to do that with just 20 minutes of lessons, but it will be memories I will always treasure!  Next time, more lessons for me!*
