Gunzelman a state finalist for Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science

January 26, 2006

Andover Central Middle School teacher Lori Gunzelman is on an elite list.  She is a state finalist for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science.  These awards recognize exemplary K-12 teachers for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession, demonstrating the value and appreciation the nation has for the teaching profession.

After being nominated, Gunzelman completed a lengthy application process.  The state evaluation team then selected 3 finalists for mathematics and 3 for science.  As a state finalist, she received a $500 award that was funded by Westar Energy.  The 6 state finalists are then sent to the national level and they select 1 math and 1 science teacher from each state.  Those selected get a trip to Washington D.C. and a $10,000 award.  The winners will be announced in March.
