History:
In 1921, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, NASSP, officially established the National Honor Society. Though many local and regional honor societies existed prior to 1921, no nationwide organization had been founded. Equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators, the NHS organization quickly developed into one of the country's leading educational groups. Today, more than 12,500 chapters are chartered in the United States.
Purpose:
NHS is more than just an honor roll. The main objectives of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, NASSP, that have guided NHS chapters from the beginning are: � to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. Admission is intended to be an award to recognize the combination of outstanding achievement in the four areas. Members must maintain the standards by which they were admitted and continue to perform service projects. Thus, membership is both an honor and a commitment.
Pledge:
I pledge myself always to seek the light of truth, to hold scholarly habits, to engage in worthy service, and to lead forward in all things that shall advance the welfare of our school, community, and world.
