Elementary Transition Committee

October 25, 2006

5:30 p.m.

District Office Board Room

Introduction

Keturah Austin distributed a new committee timeline. The committee will present 2-3 options to the board at the December board meeting. The committee will need to develop general guidelines for transitioning staff and equipment to be included at the December meeting.

Definition of terms

The committee determined the definition of a ‘move’ for students. If a whole school stayed intact, all students and staff remained together, is that considered a move. Some members defined a move is what it is, ‘a move’. After discussion the committee came to a consensus that a move is what it is

‘a move’.

The committee determined that a ‘neighborhood’ is defined as a subdivision.

Socio-economic information

Diane Fox provided socio-economic data and the average home valuation for each subdivision. This data was used for each of the five options to determine if the plans are balanced for socio-economics.

Fourth and Fifth Grade Center

A subcommittee was formed to look at an option for a 4th and 5th grade center as a temporary option with Marilyn Herr chairing the committee. Pros and cons regarding the option were distributed. The committee proposed that all 5th graders and the 4th grade from CES and RMES plus a 6% growth factor attend the new elementary building on 159th street for the 2007-08 school year and possibly the 2008-09 school year. The building would be at full capacity if an Early Childhood program is moved to the facility as well. The committee also presented two busing scenarios for a 4th/5th grade center.

Pros and Cons of Option Plans

The committee reviewed the pros and cons of the six options. Discussion then followed on how the committee will proceed to develop 2-3 options to be presented at public forums. The committee will be considering the number of moves, keeping subdivisions together, socio-economics and facility weighting as they develop these options.

Meeting Date

The next committee meeting is November 1, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
