Andover Education Association Presents Student Teacher Scholarships

The Andover Education Association is proud to present $300 scholarships to 3 outstanding young Educators in Training. The scholarships have been awarded to Emily Huelskamp, a graduate of Andover Central High School; Lauren Bammel, a graduate of Andover High School; and Melissa Meade, also an AHS graduate. Each of these young ladies are currently in their student teaching block on the road to becoming classroom teachers or will student teach in the spring. The Association is excited about their future and thrilled to be able to help in their endeavor of becoming an outstanding addition to the education field. Below you will find additional information about each of the scholarship recipients.
Melissa Meade
is currently student teaching at Robert M. Martin Elementary
School in Andover under the supervision of cooperating teacher
Tanya Hastings. She is soon to be a graduate of Wichita State
University. Meade actually attending Martin when she was a
child. It was called Andover Elementary at that time.
All twelve years of her pre-college education were in the
Andover Public Schools. She states that she "cannot thank
those teachers enough for the education they have given me.
They are part of the reason I chose to become a teacher."
Meade and her husband of three and a half years are currently residents of Andover and hope that this will be their hometown for many years. They enjoy the area and like having family nearby. Meade's hobbies include reading, scrapbooking, cooking and watching movies. She also enjoys doing many different arts and crafts.
Lauren Bammel
is currently a student at the University of Kansas and is
student teaching third grade at South Park Elementary School in
Kansas City. She student taught at Belinder Elementary from
August through October for a 1st grade class. Her cooperating
teachers are Julie Christiansen and Marilee DeAngelis. Before
attending KU, Bammel completed her thirteen years of pre college
education in Andover Public Schools. She is proud to call
Andover her home. "The education I received there gave
me part of the inspiration I needed to follow my dreams of
teaching," Bammel said. She plans to complete her
Masters degree in education before the start of the 2007-08 school
year at which point she hopes to begin teaching in an elementary
classroom.
Emily Huelskamp is a senior at
Washburn University and a graduate of Andover Central High
School. She is majoring in Mathematics Education. She will be
graduating from Washburn in May 2007. Her parents are
Terrence and Mary Huelskamp. She is a member of Delta
Gamma sorority and Math Club and participates in intramural
sports. She belongs to Kappa Mu Epsilon honor society, Gamma
Sigma Alpha honor society, Phi Kappa Phi honor society and has been
named to the President's Honor Roll. She has volunteered with
Youth Friends, Capper Foundation and coached grade school girls'
baseball. She is a math tutor at Washburn and plans to teach
high school math. Huelskamp will be student teaching in the spring
at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, Kansas. Her
cooperating teacher will be Sonja Hoglund.
