Professional Development
April 25, 2007
This web-site was developed to help teachers understand the new Kansas licensure system which went into effect July 1, 2003.
The basics of the new Kansas licensing system are:
- Preparation programs followed by assessment of content and pedagogical knowledge
- A two-year conditional license
- A five-year professional license achieved by successful completion of a performance assessment
- A ten-year accomplished teaching license for those who earn National Board Certification or who complete an assessment of accomplished teaching.
In addition, new rules for the granting and renewing of licenses (formerly certificates) will affect everyone who holds a license. In most cases, the PDC must approve the plan for acquiring points to be used for renewal (even college classes). After the plan is submitted, the PDC will hold monthly scheduled meetings to verify the points when the teacher presents activities or college credit that meets these goals. College credit will be converted to points.
