6th Grade Social Studies Syllabus

AndoverMiddle School

Mrs. Holmgren

Textbook: Scott Foresman’s Social Studies: The World

1. What topics will be covered?

We will discuss and study a variety of topics. Some of these include:

-Geography

-Ancient Civilizations

-The Middle Ages

-American Revolution and Government

-Economics

-Government

-Current Events

2. How will I be graded?

-Written or Oral tests and quizzes

-Projects

-Daily Assignments

-Participation

-Responsibility & Attitude

3. How can I tell what my child is doing in class or if he/she has any homework?

An agenda is written on the board everyday and should be copied by your child in his/her agenda book. It is very important they get in the habit of writing in this everyday, in every class! Points will be given at the end of the week in one of his/her core classes for actively filling it out.  If the student was sick or in question of what was written in the agenda book, you can view the agenda for the week on the website www.schoolnotes.com.  Click on Mrs. Holmgren and it will bring up the current agenda for 6th Grade Social Studies.  You can also view your child’s current grade in Powergrade.

4. How can I contact my teacher?

Email is the best way to contact me.  My email address is holmgrem@usd.385.org. You can also contact me by phone at 316-218-4610.

5. What materials will be needed?

It is very important that each student bring the following materials to class each day:

1.     Pen & Pencil

2.     Paper

3.     Ruler

4.     Colored Pencils

5.     Dry Erase Marker

6.     2.5in. 3-ring binder labeled “6th Grade Social Studies”

(It would be best if students kept everything in this one folder with ruler in rings while pen, pencil, and colored pencils are kept in zipper pouch, though this is not required. Good organization skills= better chance of not losing materials and assignments!)

6. Attitude & Effort…

I have extremely high expectations for students in my classroom. I understand that students come in with different experiences, characteristics and backgrounds; however one thing that is non-negotiable is attitude in my classroom. I expect each student to treat their peers and adults with the level of respect and kindness they themselves would like to be treated. Anything less will not be tolerated and dealt with immediately. This also goes for the effort put forth academically. If a student is not putting their fullest effort in my class, they can expect to schedule a time to come re-do or correct the assignment(s). This may include during their lunch time, before or after school.
