¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!
AMS offers Spanish for all 3 grades. 6th grade students may take Spanish for a quarter, 7th grade students may take Spanish for a semester, and 8th grade students may take Spanish for an entire year. The 8th grade class is a Spanish 1 class and is taught at an advanced level. Upon completion of Spanish 1, with a B or higher for all 4 quarters, the student may enroll in Spanish 2 as a Freshman.
FAQ's for 6th grade Spanish
1. Will there be homework in this class?
There should not be any homework from this class. There will be exceptions, however, if your child is absent from school or if he/she does not use their time wisely during class. Class time is allowed for students to complete any and all assignments.
2. What does my child need for this class?
Your child will be given a folder that will contain all his/her assignments and some notebook paper with which to take notes. I strongly encourage all students to keep all of their graded work in their assigned folders as proof of completing an assignment. He/She also needs to bring additional paper and a pencil or a pen on a daily basis. There is no book for this class, so the notes that are taken in class are their book.
3. What will my child learn in this class?
Your child will learn the very basics of Spanish. I tell my 6th grade students, "It's like being in kindergarten again, only this time you're going to learn everything in Spanish." The topics taught could include; the alphabet, basic greetings, numbers, colors, shapes, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, weather expressions, telling time, expressing what you like to do, clothing, parts of the body, family, food and beverages, and a cultural activity based on the time of the year the student is in the class.
FAQ's for 7th grade Spanish
1. Will my child have homework in this class?
Occasionally, yes, your student can expect to have homework. On the days that homework is assigned, it will be due the next class period at the beginning of the hour. Late work is not acceptable. Homework should only take 20 - 30 minutes on the nights it is assigned.
Your child needs a pencil or pen and paper. There is no book - so the handouts they receive in class are very important for your child to have at all times.
This class is topic driven. Grammar and verb conjugations are not the emphasis in this class, although, the students will be introduced to some very basic grammar concepts. Grades will be earned by completing unit packets, various projects, and testing over material that has been taught. Students need to be able to work alone, with a partner, and in groups of 3 or 4.
FAQ's about Spanish 1 (8th grade Spanish)
YES! This is a speaking, listening, reading, writing, and conversing in Spanish class. If your student doesn't practice vocabulary daily, he/she will not be successful in retaining the necessary skills to be a Spanish speaker.
Your child needs a 3-ring binder, paper, pencil or pen, and the book that will be furnished to him/her from the school.
Your child will learn to speak, read, write, listen, and converse in Spanish. They will also gain some insight into a culture that is in some ways the same and in some ways different than their own culture and learn to appreciate those differences.
THIS IS NOT AN "EASY A" CLASS - THIS IS A VERY RIGOROUS CLASS THAT MOVES VERY QUICKLY - PLEASE DON'T ENROLL IN THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO WORK VERY HARD!
