I have taught at Andover for the past 9 years and I enjoy the students at the middle school level. My husband works in the area. We have a daughter who graduated from AHS and works in Wichita.
What you like about ACMS: I appreciate the community support for Andover schools. Within the community the Andover Advantage Foundation is an amazing group of people who provide project funding and inspiration for teachers. I also like that the district allows teachers to obtain additional training in technology for use in the classroom.
What we are doing...
The characteristics of living things started our units on cells. Learning about cell organelles was important to understanding how organisms function. Students learned about the interaction between photosynthesis in plants and cellular respiration in animals.
Labs have included: observing gummy bears in water to demonstrate osmosis; measuring and graphing the volume of our hands; not using our opposable thumbs to cut, tie, and button; and a lab on bird beaks to learn about adaptations.
Famous people in science that we have learned about include Mendel and his work with genetics, Redi disproving spontaneous generation, Archimedes and buoyancy, Hooke viewing cork cells, and Darwin with his theory of natural selection.
