Andover School District was well represented at the Butler County Spelling Bee on Feb. 5, 2016.The following students participated: Heather Schwartzbeck, Andover Central Middle School eighth grader; Ethan Hsiao, Andover Middle School sixth grader; Eli Sheltar, Wheatland Elementary School fifth grader; Ayann Parikh, Robert Martin Elementary School fourth grader; Jeremiah Rather, Cottonwood Elementary School fifth grader; Kyle Nguyen, Sunflower Elementary School third grader; Matthew Palacios, Prairie Creek Elementary School third grader, Sophis Kiryk, Meadowlark Elementary fifth grader; and Addison Leggett, eCademy fourth grader. With just ten spellers left in the bee, all nine Andover students remained. The top four places went to Andover students!
The winner of the Butler County Spelling Bee was Jeremiah Rather, second place was Ayaan Parikh and Ethan Hsiao placed third. All three of these young men went on to represent Butler County at the Sunflower Spelling Bee at Fort Hays State University on March 5, 2016. Jeremiah placed 24th out of the 79 participants from grades 3-8. The winner of State Spelling Bee will represent Kansas in the Scripts National Spelling Bee in Washington, D. C. later this year.
