Kara Belew, social studies teacher at Andover Central High School, has been named one of eight finalists for the 2020 Kansas Teacher of the Year award.
Belew learned of the honor during a banquet Saturday in Wichita. She now advances to compete for Kansas Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in a ceremony Nov. 23, also in Wichita.
Belew teaches history, government and politics to juniors and seniors. She is starting her fourth year at Andover Public Schools.
This year, 131 educators from across the state were nominated for Teacher of the Year. Committees representing teachers, administrators and higher education selected regional finalists.
The mission of the Kansas Teacher of the Year program is to build and utilize a network of exemplary teachers who are leaders in the improvement of schools, student performance and the teaching profession. The Teacher of the Year serves as an ambassador for education in Kansas, making public appearances across the state.
