Andover Central High School has two recently graduated seniors named as finalists for the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission's High School Athlete of the Year award. Darraja Parnell and Amanda Kakoulias are both in the running for the area’s top award.
Amanda Kakoulias was named a finalist for the Wichita Sports Commission’s Lynette Woodard award which is given to the area's top high school female athlete. Kakoulias won a state championship in shot put at the state track meet along with a 4th in discus, 5th in Triple jump and 6th in javelin. She is a 2016 ACHS graduate. This year she was also selected as an AVCTL All-League and All-Metro team memeber in Volleyball, as well as an All-League Basketball player. Kakoulias will be attending Emporia State on a basketball and track scholarship.
Darraja Parnell was named a finalist for the Wichita Sports Commission’s Barry Sanders Award. Parnell is only the second athlete to be named to both the Kansas Top 11 football team and the Kansas Top All-Class Basketball team. Parnell helped lead the football team to their first ever state championship game as well as leading the basketball team to a state 3rd place finish. He will be attending Central Arkansas on a basketball scholarship next year.
They will be honored at the 2016 Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on Thursday, June 30 at Century II Exhibition Hall. Guest speakers include Jim Sundberg and Johnny Bench. For more information, visit http://www.wichitasports.com/.
