Two Andover educators have received the Horizon Award, the state’s top award for new teachers.

Victoria Bay of Andover Central Middle School and Keegan Hallmark of Andover Middle School, received news of the honor with a phone call from Education Commissioner Dr. Randy Watson Tuesday, Jan. 7.

The award goes to teachers who are in their second year in the classroom. Thirty-two teachers receive the honor each year.

Bay teaches social studies. She is known for transforming her classroom into ancient civilizations such as China or Egypt. She also creates rap songs to help her students learn historical facts.

Hallmark believes that science is a hands-on activity, and he emphasizes data collection and first-hand observation in his classes.

It is rare that a district has two Horizon Award winners in the same day.

“That tells you a little bit about the great things going on in (USD) 385,” Watson said. “We’re just so proud of you and we’re proud of everyone there.”
