Friday Update: Important Survey, Food Distribution and More

Posted Date: 03/23/2020

Dear Andover Families,

During these unbelievably difficult and challenging times, it is essential that we join together and work as a team to bring some sense of normalcy to our students and community. Today I watched as our Continuous Learning Task Force made significant progress toward our goal of resuming learning on March 31. This is an amazing group of people, consisting of more than 50 staff members, parents, and community members. We should never forget how truly fortunate we are in this community to have extraordinary people who care deeply about our students. We owe this task force our most sincere thanks.

Some determinations the Task Force made today:

  • Beginning on March 31, we will ease back into learning, with the first day or more focused on re-establishing relationships, building connections and the social/emotional needs of our students. They need that right now.
  • We will address technology concerns at home by providing additional devices or other means, so please do not let a lack of technology or Internet access cause you anxiety.
  • Although at this time the state and CDC guidelines would allow in-person learning in small groups, we do not believe that is currently in the best interest of our students or staff. We will revisit this as warranted, with the understanding that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
  • We will make this manageable for students, parents and staff. We plan to set up lessons in ways that won’t require hours of daily parental instruction or screen time for students.

Our Task Force will continue to meet (via video conferencing) through the day on Monday, with recommendations wrapping up Monday evening. We will have many more details at that time.

Here are three other important updates:

Technology survey: We are asking each family in the district to complete a brief, anonymous survey about technology availability. This data will allow us to plan lessons and device needs as we work to ramp up our Continuous Learning Plan. Time is of the essence to assist our planning. We ask that you complete the survey by the end of the day Sunday, March 22. You can complete the survey here: https://forms.gle/DPANEgC8sjU1wryZ6

(Please note: Students of Andover eCademy students do not need to complete this survey.)

Meal distribution: Andover Public Schools will begin curbside distribution of meals beginning this Tuesday, March 24. Distribution will be from 8-9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday at these locations:

  • Prairie Creek Elementary School, 654 YMCA Drive, Andover, KS 67002
  • Cottonwood Elementary School, 1747 N. Andover Rd, Andover, KS 67002
  • Andover Central High School, 603 E. Central, Andover, KS 67002

We will provide one breakfast and one lunch for any child ages 1 through 18. There is no need to be an Andover Public Schools student, nor is there a requirement for free or reduced lunch.

Children may walk up or drive up with an adult to the curb directly in front of the school’s main entrance and be served sack meals. They will be served that morning’s breakfast and that afternoon’s lunch. At this time, the child must be present to receive meals, unless special arrangements have been made in advance. For the safety of all students, adults and staff we ask that all individuals remain in your vehicles. Our staff will process the distribution as quickly as possible.

If you are feeling ill or are under quarantine under Kansas Department of Health and Environment guidelines, please do not travel to a pickup site and contact foodservice@usd385.org for alternate service.

We are here to answer questions about allergies, menus or other accommodations. Please contact us at foodservice@usd385.org for more information.

Buildings closed: Our school buildings are closed except for essential staff as directed by their supervisor. Please do not attempt to enter a school building until further notice. We are working on the logistics of how families can retrieve medications, technology, instructional materials and personal items in a manner that is consistent with CDC guidelines. We expect to have that plan available at some point next week.

Thank you for patience in these extraordinary times. I hope that you enjoy time with your family this weekend. I look forward to sharing more updates you on Monday.

Sincerely,

Brett White
Superintendent
