Prairie Creek Elementary’s outdoor classroom space began in 2016 with the 1st and 5th grade classes. The students paired up and created what they would like to see in an outdoor space on the playground. The plans were presented to Principal Shelley Jonas with her final approval given to what would be appropriate for PCE and future growth and maintenance.
Westar was approached as it has a community outreach program. Westar provided wood for benches, stumps for seating and six oak trees for the playground. It delivered the wood for benches to the local carpenter training school in Wichita, who coordinated with their trainees to design and build 10 benches for students to read on. The Wichita Carpenter School is also working on creating an outside whiteboard.
Steve Massey from Westar’s Green Team and Tim McDonnell with the Kansas Forest Service planted the trees on Oct. 18. They talked with the 1st and 2nd graders about trees and then helped each class plant a tree, which they will now take care of.
