COVID team recommends orange zone; BOE to meet Tuesday

Posted Date: 11/02/2020

Dear Andover Parents,

The Andover COVID Response and Assessment Team met this evening and has determined the district now is in the orange zone of its Gating Criteria. The district previously was in the yellow zone. Several factors, including percent positive case rate and the cumulative incidence rate in Sedgwick and Butler counties, have become more concerning in recent days and were factors in leading to the change. There also is concern about ICU bed availability in Wichita hospitals.

The Andover Board of Education will hold a special meeting via Zoom at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss this change in zone color. It also will consider implications of that decision and any possible modifications to current learning models. The meeting will be livestreamed at Any change in learning model would likely occur Monday, Nov. 9.

At this point, our district has had very few cases of COVID contracted at school. The larger concern at the moment is the spread in our community that is making its way into our schools, both in terms of positive cases and close contacts who must be away from school. Tonight the COVID team discussed the need for our families to practice disease prevention techniques in the community, including:

  • Wearing of masks when around others.
  • Maintaining social distancing.
  • Avoiding large gatherings.
  • Remaining at home when not feeling well.

We will send another message tomorrow night with updates from the Board of Education meeting.
