On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Andover High and Andover Central High Schools’ Kids 4 Kids Clubs hosted “It’s a Kid’s Christmas” at the Calvary United Methodist Church.

Kids 4 Kids, a non-profit organization and a student club at both high schools, provided Christmas gifts to over 200 different foster children from the Greater Wichita area. The foster children are encouraged to then give those gifts they selected to their foster siblings and parents on Christmas Day.

Kids 4 Kids began sponsoring “It’s a Kid’s Christmas” eight years ago. Local organizations whose children are being served by this event include: the Kansas Children’s Service League, Wichita Children’s Home, St. Francis Community Services, Salvation Army, TFI and Ember Hope. Children from these agencies went to the church and high school students helped them select the perfect gifts for each member of their foster family. All gifts were donated or purchased through contributions to the Kids 4 Kids clubs.

Jeff Roper, one of the club sponsors, said, “It is simply amazing to see students from both high schools come together and donate their time, talents and treasures to help out kids who have experienced some adverse childhood experiences.”

Andover High School junior Denae Martinez, student president of the AHS Kids 4 Kids Club, said, “I’m proud of the amount of hard work both clubs have put into this event. Our hope is to make this an enjoyable Christmas season for the kids and their families in the Greater Wichita community.”

In addition, many community volunteers donated their time to do gift-wrapping. The Kansas Children’s Service League sponsored Mickey and Minnie Mouse to be present for picture-taking opportunities. Roper said, “'It’s a Kid’s Christmas’ [is] a special event for the kids we serve, but also for the high school students who are serving on a Saturday and volunteering as well as the community volunteers who give their time. Everyone deserves a special Merry Christmas.”
