Substitute Teachers

Are you interested in becoming a substitute teacher?

Substitute teachers are integral parts of Andover Public Schools. Substitutes help maintain continuity in educating our students when classroom teachers are away. Our substitutes are a valued part of our school teams.

We invite you to click on the link above to complete an online application. If you are selected as a potential substitute, you will be extended an invitation to an orientation session for new substitute teachers. These sessions are usually held at the beginning of each semester. If there is a demand for additional substitutes, additional orientation sessions may be added. Andover Public Schools requires each substitute teacher to hold a current teaching license, standard substitute license, or emergency substitute license issued by the Kansas Department of Education.

KSDE License information

Types of substitute teaching licenses issued by the Kansas Department of Education (KSDE):

Standard Substitute License
- To apply for a standard substitute license you must hold a degree and completed a teacher prepraration program.
- Standard substitute licensees may remain in the same assignment (same teacher, same class, no breaks) for up to 90 days.
- To renew a standard substitute license, you will need to complete 50 professional development points awarded by a local Kansas Professional Development Council.
Emergency Substitute License
- To apply for an emergency substitute license, you must have completed at least 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Emergency substitute licensees who have a four-year degree are limited to 30 days in the same assignment; emergency substitute licensees without a four-year degree are limited to 15 days in the same assignment.
- Emergency substitute licensees without a four-year degree cannot teach for more than 60 days in a semester.

EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 15, 2014:
Any person submitting any of the following will ALSO be required to submit AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION, a complete set of fingerprints and the required fee:

An application for the first Kansas certificate or license;
An application for renewal of an expired Kansas certificate or license; or
NEW An application for renewal of a valid Kansas certificate or license, if the person has never submitted fingerprints as part of any previous application for a Kansas certificate or license.

Health & safety training

Andover Public Schools requires all employees to complete annual health and safety training modules. The training modules are selected according to district training needs and KSDE requirements and made available to employees online each year.

If you complete training modules with another school district, you are not required to repeat the training. Forward a transcript of the training module(s) completed to Human Resources to have them marked complete.
